Health Issues, It’s All About the Dog — Not About Us

 By Sin City Pits

There are far too many dogs being produced year after year with poor health — to the point of damaging the reputation of entire breeds. Some may say it’s due to bad genetics, but in reality, it all comes down to improper breeding and incorrectly whelping litters.

In this blog, we want to share some basic knowledge we’ve gained over the years — in hopes that it leads to more healthy litters and better outcomes for dogs and families alike.

Many people think breeding and raising puppies is easy. Just throw two dogs in the backyard, let them mate, stick the pups with mom in a box or room, provide some water, dump food in a big bowl, and find them homes, right? Wrong.

When done properly, breeding is far from easy — and how those pups are whelped, raised, and nourished in their first weeks of life determines their long-term health and ability to thrive as stable companions or working dogs.

Breeder ≠ Quality Without Research

Too often, consumers looking for a dog come across a breeder, assume they’re getting quality just because there’s a price tag, and place all their trust in that person. They pay thousands of dollars expecting a top-tier dog — when in reality, they could’ve gotten the same poor-quality pup for free off Craigslist, from a friend, or even at a shelter. It all comes down to a lack of research. Bringing unhealthy puppies into this world is heartbreaking — not just for the dogs, but for the people who buy them. Those families end up with broken hearts and drained bank accounts from constant vet visits.

This is why reputable breeders matter — and why
Sin City Pits has built an entirely different standard.

We don’t just sell dogs — we’ve built a structured, DNA-driven breeding program focused on consistency, intelligence, health, and legacy. That’s the foundation of the American Terrier, our own refined breed class developed from decades of hands-on experience.

Producing a Well-Bred Dog Takes More Than a Pedigree

Especially in our breed, producing a truly well-bred dog takes:
- Knowledge
- Experience
- Dedication
- Patience
- Time
- And yes, serious financial investment

Many breeders (in all breeds) will hype up a pedigree — "the best bloodline this," "the hottest line that." But what does that actually mean? Absolutely nothing — if they lack the knowledge and experience to back it up.

You can spend thousands on breeding stock and still have health issues if you don’t know how to properly structure a breeding or raise the litter right. In fact, the first 12 months of a dog’s life are the most critical. The breeder controls the first 8 weeks — the buyer takes over the next 10 months.

At
Sin City Pits, we’ve whelped litters that have gone on to become not just family companions, but working dogs, therapy dogs, and trusted protectors — because we focus on the full process, not just what sounds good on paper.

Yes, Health Issues Can Still Happen — But Here’s Why

Can two well-bred dogs from the same bloodline still produce pups with health issues?
Yes. Why? Because even with great genetics, it's all about how the litter is raised.

With a well-bred line, you’re already miles ahead — but if the litter isn’t whelped properly, problems can still develop.

It starts with nutrition:
- Puppies must consume colostrum from the dam within 24 hours — this jumpstarts their immune system.
- As they wean, they must receive proper calories, fats, and proteins to support growth.
- A clean environment is essential. So is space to move and emotional attention for healthy brain development.

Feeding raw diets before 12 months is NOT recommended. Neither is loading puppies up with every supplement trending online.

Why?
Because giving certain things too young can cause internal developmental issues — affecting organs, liver, kidneys, joints, vision, coat, and brain function. These aren’t things you can easily test or see at such a young age — so you must trust your breeder.

And that’s exactly why it’s critical to work with one who truly knows what they’re doing.

Less is More” – Raising Puppies with Purpose

After decades of hands-on experience, here’s what we’ve learned at Sin City Pits:
🐾 “Less is more” when raising puppies in their first year.
- No flirt poles
- No spring poles
- No jumping off furniture
- No running on slippery floors

Keep it simple: casual walks, play, and gentle movement support safe growth.

For nutrition, stay natural. Feed a high-quality kibble and use natural toppers to support development. Here are some of our go-to additions:

- Wild or Organic Blueberries – (antioxidants, fiber)
- Organic Egg Shells / Whole Egg – (calcium, protein)
- Organic Raw Broccoli – (vitamin K: liver, bones, immunity)
- Organic Shredded Ginger – (heart, anti-inflammatory, digestion)

- Lavish Paws Wild Salmon Oil – (omega-3, 6, 9)

- Lavish Paws Multivitamins – (full spectrum A, B1–B12, C, D3, E, phosphorus)

We’ve tested and trust every ingredient listed — because we believe in proof, not promises.

A Legacy in Motion

We at Sin City Pits have learned so much over the past decade breeding and raising dogs. With over 30 litters and 260+ productions, there’s no better teacher than experience.

Everything we share is based on real-world results, not theory.

And now, we share that knowledge with every family who joins ours — because together, we can raise these dogs at the highest standard they deserve.

We’re more than just breeders.
We’re curating a new standard.
We’re preserving a legacy.
We are Sin City Pits —
"Not your ordinary program"
